As the City of Culture’s ‘Cultural Icon’ competition closed last week, it emerged that the public’s icon was singer Keith Harkin.

The epic prize for the winning voter was a golden ticket which grants them admission to all of the City of Culture events throughout the year. The lucky winner Colin Colhoun received his golden ticket this week and said; “It is an amazing prize that I am over the moon to have won.

Graeme Farrow, Executive Programmer at Culture Company said: “We are delighted with the amazing response and have had 15,000 votes placed by people from all over the world.”

The cultural icon, Keith Harkin, who is currently touring Australia and is based in LA received over 7,000 of the total votes and was, determined the clear winner. He commented:

“I’d just like to say thank you so much and let the people who voted for me know how honoured I am to be chosen as the Cultural Icon for Derry. Derry is always in my heart, and always will be, no matter where I am in the world. I will make it my mission to let everyone else in the world know about how amazing our city really is, this year is Derry’s year to shine. A year for the people of Derry to enjoy what the City of Culture has to offer. Long may it continue.”
