One of the world’s most exciting young musicians will perform next week at the University of Ulster’s Magee Campus as part of Walled City Music’s 2013 concert series.

Winner of the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition, Croatian born pianist Martina Filjak has been garnering praise across the globe for her poetic passion and technical mastery at the keyboard.

Martina will enthrall the Great Hall’s audience with a programme entitled The Romantic Piano featuring virtuoso works by Schumann and Liszt, Prokofiev, Scriabin and Balakirev.

Her transition from prodigy to mature international artist has been all the more remarkable against the backdrop of political maelstrom that defined her native Croatia during her childhood.

During her career she has performed with leading orchestras worldwide. As recitalist and concerto soloist, Martina has also appeared at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; the Palau de la Música Catalana and L’Auditori, Barcelona; the Palais des Congrès, Strasbourg; the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Severance Hall in Cleveland as well as Carnegie Hall, New York.

Her extensive repertoire ranges from Bach to Berio and encompasses 30 concertos. A keen hiker and lover of the great outdoors, she delights in playing music that evokes the sounds of nature and folk music. Interestingly, her love of nature and conservation led her to being chosen to front the Croatian government’s campaign to save the Lynx as an endangered species. She speaks seven different languages and established the Martina Filjak Scholarship which aids young people on musical pathways in Cleveland, USA.

Martina Filjack will perform at the University of Ulster at Magee on Thursday January 24th at 7.30pm. Tickets for the concert, priced at £10 and £5, are available online at walledcitymusicfestival.com or at the door on the evening.
