The fourth annual ‘From The Heart’ concert, in aid of suicide awareness, will be hosted at The Millennium Forum on Saturday July, 7. The concert is held in memory of Eamonn Johnston, who took his own life on July 11, 2007. Eamonn’s mother Bebe, organises the tribute concert in order to facilitate a discussion on the issue of suicide.
This year the acts helping Bebe celebrate Eamonn’s life and raise awareness of an issue she describes as “an epidemic” include compere Michael Doherty, Bagatelle, Bjorn Identity, Susan McCann, Plunkett McGartland, Niamh McGlinchey, Colleen Gormley, Ben Kelly and Caelan McDermott. Bebe has organised the show each year but says that now, approaching the fifth anniversary of her son’s death, it is becoming harder.
“The issue of suicide is a frustrating one. There are so many out there it is rotten like an epidemic. I hope the concert helps people talk about ,it. While it is hard I enjoy doing it and get a great satisfaction on the night. There is of course sadness but you hope it helps someone.”
Local MP Mark Durkan and Martina Anderson MEP have both urged the Derry public to come out and support the concert. Ms Anderson said: “This concert is now a part of the Derry theatre calendar. Organised by a very brave mother. Bebe’s tireless campaign to maintain a focus on the unacceptable level of suicide in our society and particularly in our youth population is commendable.”
