Doc Martins at the ready for the musical sensation of the season! Rehearsals begin shortly in the Danske Bank Studio before Teenage Kicks – A Punk Musical premieres at the Millennium Forum on Friday 1st November. This brand new production will run at the cityside venue until Saturday 9th November.
Featuring songs from The Undertones, The Buzzcocks, The Stranglers and many more from the punk era, this brand new show has been specially commissioned for 2013 and is a co-production by the Millennium Forum and The Nerve Centre.
Penned by Colin Bateman (Divorcing Jack, Murphy’s Law) and directed by Des Kennedy (Once - the Musical, Vernon God Little), it tells the story of Derry teenager Jimmy McMurphy, who escapes Northern Ireland in 1981 by way of a student exchange programme to St. Francis Xavier High School in the US state of Iowa.
Principal Truman expects to host a war damaged refugee, but instead finds himself confronted by an exuberant, spiky-haired punk rocker intent on bringing rock’n’rolling anarchy to the school population - while breaking a few hearts along the way. But is Jimmy all he claims to be?
Set to an electrifying soundtrack from the music that defined a generation, Teenage Kicks – A Punk Musical will have audiences rocking to songs such as ‘Ever Fallen In Love With Someone?’, ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’ and, of course, ‘Teenage Kicks’.
Noirin McKinney, Director of Arts Development at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland said: “We are delighted to see the world premiere of Teenage Kicks - a Punk Musical being staged at the Millennium Forum as part of the UK City of Culture. This has been a momentous year for Derry/Londonderry and this opportunity to share some of the rich musical history of the city and new contemporary writing is a great one.“
Don’t miss this pulsating new musical!
