Guitar fest in tune to celebrate 10 years

The 10th City of Derry Guitar Festival has been officially launched and applications are now open for all courses.

State-of-the-art performance and recording facilities at the North West Regional College’s new Foyle Building at Strand Road is the venue for the festival which is taking place from August 24-26.

The three day festival is set to offer local guitar enthusiasts the opportunity to develop or perfect their playing skills, whether that be classical, electric or acoustic.

From beginners to the more accomplished performer, there will be something on offer for everyone.

And, what’s more, a series of top-class concerts from renowned guitarists will take place each evening and lunch time in the College’s modern Foyle Theatre.

In the run up to the festival, audiences will also be treated to a series of free lunchtime concerts in cafes around the city centre.

A spokesperson for North West Regional College said: “We are delighted to be the host venue for the 2012 City of Derry Guitar Festival, especially in its tenth anniversary, which, in itself, is a hallmark of its success and popularity.

“The three day festival promises to be very enjoyable for everyone concerned, whether they be signing up for the classes, or performing in our new Foyle Theatre, and we encourage all local guitar enthusiasts to join us for the events.”

Those wishing to develop their playing abilities or song-writing skills will be able to avail of classes and courses which will include classical, acoustic and beginners guitar courses, as well as the AC/DC Riffs Library electric guitar and the new Songwriting Course.

Evening performances will feature internationally acclaimed artists such as Gary Ryan, Carlos Bonell and Sean Woods and Sarah Murphy. At lunch time, audiences will be treated to a recital by guitar and soprano Tonos Duo, specialising in baroque music.
