Fear not if you’re one of the many who missed out on One Big Weekend tickets! Derry will host its own alternative to the BBC’s musical Goliath in the form of next weekend’s North by North West Urban Festival.
With Derry being world-renowned for its musicianship, there’s no shortage of quality acts and North by North West will feature 40 local bands, DJs and acts next Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26.
Saturday’s festivities take place at The Playhouse on Artillery Street, from 5pm until 1am, with three stages. Headlining will be Little Bear, after the Wood Burning Savages, Our Krypton Son, Intermission, John Derry & The Heads and GRIM. Stage Two at the Playhouse will be DJ-led, with Jonny Boy (Culture Glitch Records) headlining after David Campbell, The Crimson Underground, Figure of 8 and more. Stage Three will see Declan McLaughlin headline a bill including The Murder Balladeers, Paul Tully and DAN, among others.
Sunday, May 26, will see an early show staged at The Playtrail in Pennyburn, 15 Racecourse Road, from 3pm-6pm. Playing at this unique venue will be Paddy Nash & The Happy Enchiladas, The Dandy Horses, Connor Hutcheon and Cahir McLaughlin. On Sunday evening, festivities return to the Playhouse, where Soak will top the bill alongside acts like Strength, Invaderband, and more. A second stage will feature Teknopeasant and more. There will also be performers dotted along the city’s historic walls, two bars, food stalls and state-of-the-art visuals in every performance space, as well as the obligatory street performers and fire jugglers!
