Preparations are well underway for Radio One’s Big Weekend - which kicks off on Friday at Ebrington.
The transformation of the square at Ebrington has begun in earnest with work underway to erect the main stage at the landmark event, which will play host to series of world class performers such as Biffy Clyro, Bruno Mars and The Script,
In advance of the weekend a number of traffic and travel arrangements have been released - which will include the closure of the Peace Bridge all weekend.
It will close from 09.15 am this Friday, 24 May until 8 am on Monday, 27 May. Managed access will be provided for residents of Browning Drive only. There will be no access through Ebrington Square from the gatehouse to the Peace Bridge from 9.15am on 22 May to 8am on 27 May while the Waterside Riverfront Greenway path will be closed over the weekend from early Friday, 24 May.
The public are advised that there will be restrictions in place for pedestrians in and around the city with no pedestrian access to Ebrington Square, via Dales Corner, from midnight until 7am each night until 21st May and also on 28th and 29th May. This access route will be closed off fully from 9.15 am on 24 May until 7 am on 28 May.
Pedestrians will be unable to walk along the footpath at the perimeter of the Ebrington site on the Limavady Road from 6.00 am on Friday 24th to Sunday 26th, and will have to use the footpath on the other side of the Limavady Road.
A series of traffic and parking restrictions will in place over the weekend – they include the temporary closure of the Limavady Road on the evenings of Friday 24th – Sunday 26th May, post concert for a limited period. This is to enable a rapid and safe departure of concert goers departing the site.
Traffic diversions will be in place and will be well sign posted. Parking restrictions will be enforced by the PSNI along the Limavady Road throughout the weekend. Drivers are advised that dropping off will not be permitted along the Limavady Road.
There will be no vehicle access to St Columb’s Road throughout the event from the morning of Friday, 24th until the event close. Access will be restricted to accredited vehicles only.
And on Queen’s Quay and the Foyle Embankment, contingency traffic plans will also be in place for the closure of Queen’s Quay and Foyle Embankment which may be necessary for reasons of crowd safety. The DRD’s Queen’s Quay car park will be closed on Thursday 23rd May from 6pm until Monday 27th May to assist with event planning arrangements.
