Shantallow Sinn Féin councillor Elisha McCallion has called for work to begin now to plan for a major outdoor summer event in Galliagh. Colr. McCallion appealed to interested groups and individuals, as well as all relevant agencies, to get together to consider ideas for a large scale event similar to last year’s Galliagh Fleadh.
Last year’s event was the first of its kind to be held in the area and was timed to coincide with the All-Ireland Fleadh, which was held in the city for the first time in August and attracted more than 400,000 visitors.
Colr. McCallion said she is hopeful the local community can build on the success of last year’s event but encouraged people to begin the process now.
“The foundations for the festival have to be laid well in advance and it is the responsibility of all those with an interest, including Derry City Council, to begin the planning process,” she said.
The Sinn Féin colr, said such large scale events require extensive planning and cannot be left to the last minute.
“Several key elements must be brought together including securing children’s facilities and a live act for the festival.
“I am calling on all those with an interest in being involved in the planning or staging of the event to make themselves known to the organisers which include the Outer North community safety team,” she said.
A range of community groups and individuals in the area co-operated to stage the festival, which featured local traditional the cream, of local traditional music talent.
