One in five people in Ireland saw Derry shine during the Fleadh thanks to nightly live coverage on Irish medium TV channel TG4.

Viewing figures collected by TG4 showed that over all an estimated 850,000 in the Republic of Ireland watched some of Fleadh Cheoil over the five days it was broadcast.

No viewing figures are currently available for Northern Ireland but You Tube videos posted by TG4 and others simply out enjoying the Fleadh have received thousands of hits. There were unconfirmed reports that online Fleadh Live hits topped one million.

The TG4 spokesperson said: “When TG4 broadcast this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann from Derry it marked the first time that the Fleadh Cheoil was broadcast live on Irish television.

“It was a big success and proved very popular with viewers in the 26 counties.One in five or 850,000 people watched at least some of the Fleadh Cheoil over the five days it was shown on TG4 between Wednesday and Sunday. An average of 300,000 people tuned into the coverage each day. Peak viewing for any individual minute was on Saturday night when 120,000 were watching at one point during the last hour.”
