If this battle-weary warrior looks familiar to some, it’s because it’s none other than local man Dermot McGowan - better known as music producer Figure of 8 - as he appears in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’.
Dermot, now based in Belfast, has been making quite a name for himself as a solo producer thanks to his superb remixes for bands like Lamb and The Rapture, and his glorious debut single ‘No One Cries For Me’, released earlier this year on French label, On The Fruit Records.
But despite European success, Dermot still finds time to enlist as an extra in the multi-award-winning ‘Game of Thrones’ - the TV series adapted from George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels.
“I was a big fan of the show anyway and was an extra late last year,” Dermot told the ‘Journal’. “I had some mates working on it and the job requirements were long hair and a beard, so I ticked all the boxes!”
Already one of the highest-earning TV series ever, ‘Game of Thrones’ is filmed primarily on location in the North, generating tens of millions for the local economy.
“It was a full-on Hollywood production, the set and costumes were really amazing,” Dermot recalls.
“They didn’t need much make-up for me, they just fired a pile of dirt on my face and a load of Vaseline in my hair - I’ve looked worse! And I’m signed up for season three already!”
Dermot’s alter-ego, Figure of 8, will bring his skills closer to home this month, with a live performance at Celtronic 2012 in Sandinos on Thursday, June 28, alongside Todd Terje (Oslo). Admission: £8.
