New film companies to be announced in Derry

Two new international film and TV-related companies are expected to be launched in Derry this weekend, it has emerged.

US media and entertainment law firm SmithDehn LLP have revealed the new announcements will be made at a press conference and launch party booked for this Saturday, April 19th at 6pm at the Centre for Contemporary Art at Artillery Street in Derry,

It is understood the companies will be based in Northern Ireland and that both will be involved in film/TV development, financing, production, sales, and legal services.

Recruitment for the companies is already under way.

A statement posted on the NI Screen website states: “One of the first film projects of these companies reportedly will be an uplifting, scripted drama set in Northern Ireland, coming from ideas to be developed by a local, cross-community story collective. A

“At the moment, there is a slate of three films and three TV series intended to be shot in Northern Ireland.”

SmithDehn LLP is also expected to announce an expansion of its University of Ulster course on the business and law of film and television at Magee during the event on Saturday.

Along with its clients HBO and Channel 4, SmithDehn has been involved in the training of new producers and media law professionals.

It is understood HBO executives and a string of international guests will be at the event in Derry this weekend.
