Rosie Jones goes on a Great British Adventure

Comedian Rosie Jones’ new series Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure had the working title Rosie’s Great British, Female Gay, Disabled, Covid Compliant Adventure, which isn’t exactly snappy but is certainly descriptive.

It also tips viewers off that this isn’t going to be quite the same as the many other travelogues we’ve seen recently in which celebrities explore parts of Britain, in some cases because they couldn’t go anywhere else.

(Joanna Lumley’s recent series Home Sweet Home – Travels in My Own Land was originally supposed to be a documentary about the spice route, although the Absolutely Fabulous actress did point out that she was glad of the chance to see more of the UK.)

As well as being a travel guide, the new series finds Rosie navigating a heightened reality, one in which her planned global, luxury travelogue has been scrapped due to Covid. However, she isn’t letting that stop her as she’s convinced Channel 4 to let her make her way around Britain instead, on the understanding that she’ll be doing it on the cheap.

So, when she’s not enjoying being beside the seaside in Whitby, , earning her stripes as a shepherd in Anglesey and getting into the ring for a wrestling match in Norwich, Rosie will also be hearing from the Channel 4 commissioner (played by Rachel Stubbings), who is usually too busy with her celebrity contacts to pay much attention to Rosie’s show.

Luckily, plenty of other people are willing to give Rosie a chance. Not only has she recruited some famous travel companions to join her, but the series is narrated by an A-lister who would surely impress even the most sceptical commissioner – Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman.

And as for Rosie – she’s just glad to be out and about. The comedian says: “I spent lockdown back in Yorkshire with my parents, which was…tricky! But it did remind me how beautiful my hometown of Bridlington is, with its beautiful beaches, wildlife, and lovely locals. I want to explore more brilliant places like this. To be honest, I’m just over the moon to be leaving the house again!”

She certainly shouldn’t feel cooped up in this first episode, which finds her heading to the Lake District with fellow presenter and one-time Goggleboxer Scarlett Moffatt.

In their quest to explore the area’s history and beauty, they’ll be calling in at the former home of William Wordsworth to see if it inspires their own poetry before going even further back in time to re-enact a Viking battle at Kendal Castle.

The duo also get a driving lesson on a 100-year-old traction engine, although they draw the line at eating a lunch cooked using its heat, and check into a very unusual hotel room – their bunk bed is in the middle of a stable.

However, their biggest challenge might involve handling a very old and very fragile sausage-making machine.
