Sister Act brings the house down at the Millennium Forum

If Emer McCaffrey teaches half as good as she does disco, then it's no wonder Lumen Christi College is one of the top performing schools in Northern Ireland.

Whoopi Goldberg’s got nothing on her.

The Derry teacher brought the house down last night at the second night of the Londonderry Musical Society’s four night run of Sister Act at the Millennium Forum.

It was three hours of non-stop fun, singing and good hearted entertainment.

This is simply a sensational show.

From disco dancing diva to irreverent nun, Emer McCaffrey is a woman born to be on the stage. I challenge anyone to better her portrayal of Deloris Van Cartier.

Local G.P. Judith O’Hare, playing the role Mother Superior is a woman not to be toyed with.

Her comic timing was spot on, and her on stage chemistry with Deloris was infectious. Watch for the confessional scene, it’s one to savour.

But it’s the nuns in this production (and there are a lot of them), that deserve special mention.

Try and keep up with the numerous costume changes, fast paced dancing and praying.

The adorable Sister Mary Patrick, played by Muire McCallion, was particularly entertaining (for those looking for a comparison with the film, she’s the crazy nun.)

She had the audience in stitches with her ‘I just killed and angel’ sequence and asking Deloris ‘What was her favourite part of being a nun?’

Sister Mary Robert (the quiet nun with the big voice), played by Enya Loughlin is a lady to watch out her. She has a voice to die for, and the role of leading lady could be coming her way soon.

The men in this show also deserve a mention. The gangsters version of the ‘The Lady in the Long Black Dress’ was my favourite of the show.

“No nun is gonna say no to us.” one says.

Without a doubt, this show is an sensational local production with a professional finish.

The scene transitions were seamless, and the live orchestra under the direction of Peter Doherty brought the whole thing together.

One or two issues with sound didn’t take away from the overwhelming success of a fun loving family show.

Watch out for the surprise guest at the end.

The cast more than deserved their standing ovation.
