Major service station plan for new A6 roundabout at Drumahoe

A major proposal for a service station at a new roundabout that’s being constructed in Drumahoe as part of the A6 dualling project has been lodged with planners.

A design statement submitted with the application says the development at the proposed new Lismacarol Roundabout will create many jobs in both the construction and operational stages, if approved.

The applicant is W&J Chambers Ltd. and the proposal is to establish a filling station, car wash, café, restaurant, shop, tourist information facility, toilets and ATM.

A picnic area, parking for cars, caravans, motorhomes, coaches and lorries is also planned and the facility, if it gets the green light from planners, will, the design and access statement states, be open on a 24 hour basis.

“Access will be from the A6 at Lismacarol Roundabout (under construction as of June 2020) and Tirbracken Road which bounds the site to the north,” says the design statement which was prepared and submitted for the applicant by the architect and town planner David Dalzell.

“The site is ideally located adjacent to the new A6 alignment and also immediately adjacent to the Lismacarol Roundabout. From Spring 2022 until the dual carriageway is extended to the A2 at Stradreagh, this roundabout will be the entry and exit point to the new A6 via on/off slip roads with connections to Glenshane Road (old A6) and Tirbracken Road.

“There are no modern roadside service areas along the route of the A6 offering the range of services required by private and freight traffic,” the statement declares.

The application will be considered and deliberated upon by the Derry City and Strabane District Council Planning Committee at a later date.
