Surestart expansion to Tullyally and Drumahoe under consideration, says McIlveen

The expansion of Surestart coverage to Tullyally and Drumahoe will be considered as part of a review of early year interventions expected to conclude within weeks, Education Minister Michelle McIlveen has said.

She was asked about the service by Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin, who asked whether a departmental review will include ‘a recommendation on the permanent expansion of Surestart coverage to the wards of Tullyally and Drumahoe in the Foyle constituency’.

Ms. McIlveen replied: “Some addresses in the Tullyally and Drumahoe areas are now served by Waterside Sure Start under temporary expansion which, since 2021 has extended Sure Start services to an additional 22 Super Output Areas (SOAs), now falling within the 25% most disadvantaged in Northern Ireland.

"Targeting of Sure Start is being considered (including the 22 SOAs) within the ongoing, Independent Review of Targeted Early Years Interventions, which is expected to conclude by autumn 2022.

"I will take account of findings in the Review Report when this is made available to the Department.”
