Coronavirus rate has surged in BT48 and BT47 post codes areas doubling on Derry's cityside

The prevalence of coronavirus more than doubled in Derry's cityside over Christmas, according to a breakdown of COVID-19 rates by post code area.

Between December 28 and January 3 in the BT48 postal code area, which covers the west bank of the Foyle, there were 577 positive SARS-CoV-2 cases giving a rate per 100,000 people of 948.1.

This was up from cases rates of 412.4 per 100,000 last week, 302.3 a fortnight ago, 157.7 three weeks ago, 187.3 four weeks ago, 187.7 five weeks ago, 194.3 six weeks ago, 217.4 seven weeks ago, 283.2 eight weeks ago, 398.5 nine weeks ago and 691.6 ten weeks ago.

It was lower than the peak of 1,155.9 per 100,000 that was recorded in BT48 eleven weeks ago when the Department of Health started published prevalence rates by post code.

In BT47, the Waterside and the north Derry countryside as far as Dungiven, the rate has also risen sharply.

Between December 28 and January 3 the case rate in BT47 was 777.4 per 100,000 with 481 cases over the seven days.

This was up from 446.1 per 100,000 last week, 221.4 a fortnight ago, 274.8 three weeks ago, 260.2 four weeks ago, 214.8 five weeks ago, 232.7 six weeks ago, 216.4 seven weeks ago, 275 eight weeks ago, 364.5 nine weeks ago and 595.5 ten weeks ago.

It was lower than its previous peak of 997.4 per 100,000 eleven weeks ago.

In Strabane (BT82) there were 110 cases giving a prevalence rate of 409.1 per 100,000, almost quadruple the rate of 119 per 100,000 recorded this time last week.

In the Castlederg area (BT81) the case rate was 608.4 per 100,000 people with 48 cases registered during the week, almost double the rate of 316.9 posted last week.
