Father John McNamara (82), a member of the Carmelite community at Termonbacca, passed away in hospital in Belfast on Thursday morning.

Originally from Scotland, Father John had been based in Derry for the past 15 years and was, according to friends and colleagues, “much loved” and “respected” for his generous nature.

It’s understood Father John contracted the virus while recovering from recent surgery.

Fr. John Grennan, Prior at Termonbacca, said he was “heartbroken” by his colleague’s death.

“Father John was a wonderful person who always had the welfare of others as his number one priority,” he said.

“He helped so many people who came to us looking for advice, support or, perhaps, just a listening ear. He always made himself available.

“He will be sorely missed and I’d like to thank all those who remembered him in their prayers over the last few days.”

Also paying tribute to Father John was retired politician Pat Ramsey.

The former Derry Mayor and Foyle MLA described the priest as someone who had served the North West community for many years. “He was loved by many who attended the monastery and will be greatly missed,” he added.

Tributes were also made on social media with hundreds of people hailing Father John as a “beautiful human being” and someone who will “never be forgotten”.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, Father John’s wake and funeral are strictly private.
