The new leisure centre at St Columb’s Park is to be named the Foyle Arena.

Derry City councillors approved both the name and centre logo at a recent meeting.

The new Foyle Arena - touted as the city’s flagship leisure centre - is expected to open in March 2015.

Mayor Brenda Stevenson says the project is one of Derry City Council’s most exciting and ambitious capital build projects ever.

It’s understood the new centre represents an investment of £12 million for the Waterside area.

Mayor Stevenson says that, once completed, the new centre will benefit the entire city and “put the city on the map in terms of providing a sports facility and events venue of regional scale and significance”.

She added: “This is a significant investment by Derry City Council - a £12m. investment in leisure provision fit for the 21st century. I am delighted that the build project is on schedule and on budget and look forward to seeing the building as it nears completion.”

In addition to significant sport and leisure facilities, the Foyle Arena will also be a permanent venue for cultural, entertainment and commercial events.

Foyle Arena will provide a multi-purpose indoor sports hall with seating capacity of 2,000, a fully equipped fitness suite, a strength and conditioning area along with a purpose built sports development and athlete support services area.

The arena will also house a 25 metre swimming pool with a moving floor alongside a separate children’s pool and two new outdoor synthetic five-a-side pitches.

Plans also include centres of excellence facilities for judo, wrestling and indoor climbing.
