February 1985 - Shock at 60 per cent shoplifting hike in stores

Shoplifting is causing headaches among traders in Derry - especially those in the major stores where the crime has increased so dramatically in the past year that some have had to double the number of store detectives employed.

While shoplifting has always existed to some extent, it has grown into a major problem in recent years in Derry.

One of the bigger stores has witnessed a 50 per cent increase in shoplifting in twelve months and this has taken its toll in the business’s overall profits.

Although not all shoplifting cases are reported to the RUC, the numbers which have been reported have risen by 60 per cent since 1982.

A police spokesman says shopkeepers must be vigilant.
