From the archives - Ocotber 1983 - Deputation want Creggan reservoirs/ path ‘made safe’

Sinn Féin elected representative Martin McGuinness led his first deputation to the Guildhall when he spoke to members of the City Council’s Amenities and Leisure Committee about a number of complaints about the Creggan resevoirs. The deputation also expressed deep concern about safety at the reservoirs, where three young children have drowned.

Mr Hugh Gallagher, a member of the deputation, told councillors that residents had signed a petition demanding that the Water Service make a path between the reservoirs a public footpath and put up lighting. He said many people used the path to get from Creggan to Glenowen, and in winter months the path was quite dangerous due to the lack of lighting.
