New Tyrone church will be blessed on Sunday

The new Church of St. Theresa, Sion Mills, which will be solemnly blessed and officially opened by the Bishop of Derry, Most Rev. Dr. Farren, on Sunday next.

The new church, which will accommodate 750 people, replaces the temporary corrugated iron church which has served the area for 35 years and which accommodated 450 people.

The most striking external feature of this modern church is a 46ft. wide by 13ft. high green clate engraving depicting the Last Supper. It was designed by the eminent Irish sculptor, Mr. Oisin Kelly.

The stained glass work, which has been designed by Patrick Pollen, of Dublin, related the local weaving industry in the designs. One picture depicts Our Lady at a spinning wheel [ Coats of arms depicted of late Pope John and Bishop Farren].

The modern altar furnishings were designed by the distinguished metal sculptor, Werner Schurmann, of Dublin.

The architect of the building was Mr. Patrick Haughey, Belfast, and the contract, Mr. John McMenamin, Strabane.
