January 1980 - Councillors call for Housing Executive to scale-up its plans

Two members of Derry City Council, Councillor William O’Connell, chairman of the Housing Liaison Committee, and Alderman Len Green, have called for a scaling-up of the Housing Executive’s plans for 2,000 more houses in the next five years. Alderman Green said the number needed to be as least 1,000 more.

Both Council members were replying to the Housing Executive statement which detailed the Executive’s house-building record in the Derry area, and foreshadowed its performance over the next five years.

The Housing Executive said that over 6,000 houses had been built in the Derry and North West area in the past decade, and another 2,000 houses would be built in the next five years, it was stated.
