March 1976: ‘Hopeful signs’ of state industry for Derry - ICTU officer

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ campaign, ‘A Better Life For All,’ was launched west of the Bann with a conference in Magee University College, Derry, At the conference Mr Brendan Harkin, vice-president of the ICTU, announced that the government and the NI Finance corporation are giving urgent consideration to the creation of a state-sponsored manufacturing industry for Derry.

He said there were signs that more industries in Derry and elsewhere in N Ireland were going to get into difficulty and the trade unions had presented specific proposals to the Finance Corporation for state-sponsored manufacturing projects, including one for Derry. While it was too early yet to make definite promises, there were some quite hopeful signs that something would be done about it,” he said.
