March 1976: Too many X films shown in Derry - Councillor Healtley

At a meeting of Derry City Council’s Amenities and Leisure Committee councillor Gerry Heatley said that he would like to protest in the strongest possible terms about the number of X certificate films in the Council’s ‘What’s On’ list for March.

He said that one particular cinema was showing nothing but X certificate films during the month and for one week during the month all cinemas would be screening an X certificate.

“When the issue of X certificate films was discussed by the Council, I felt people should have the opportunity of seeing them because no one twists a person’s arm to go into a cinema,” said Councillor Heatley. “But I think it’s ridiculous where for a whole week no one under the age of 18 can’t get into a local cinema. “
