March 1977 - £20m plus bill for Derry Troubles damage in ten years

Since the Troubles began in N. Ireland almost ten years ago, £20,600,000 has been paid to property owners in Derry for criminal damage to properties as a consequence of terrorist activities.

The sum represents 11,370 claims which were settled up until the end of last month.

There are about 800 claims outstanding, the result of damage caused during the last six months. The Derry figure represents just under 10 per cent of the total NI figure of 232,000,000.

Although the figure does not include damage caused since last September, interim payments may have been paid to claimants.

The outstanding amount due is impossible to estimate because such claims are the subject of negotiations.
