Old Fountain-Bishop St in the late 1960s

This week’s slideshow features photographs of the old Fountain-Bishop Street district from the late 1960s.

The images were captured just weeks before many streets and buildings in the district - one of the oldest and most historic in the city - were demolished as part of a redevelopment scheme.

Among the buildings to be felled by the wrecking ball was the city’s magnificent old jail on Bishop Street. Only one turret of the building was saved and currently houses a museum.
