Funding announced for greenway projects in Donegal - including two in Inishowen

The Inishowen Greenway has been awarded €45,000 for a route selection on an 8km section from Muff to Quigley’s Point and €180,000 for a 32km section from Buncrana to Carndonagh.

A further €115,000 has also been granted for the Foyle Valley Greenway, also under Donegal County Council, for a 28.5km section from Carrigans to Castlefinn.

The announcement was made by as part of a total package of €4.5million in funding for 26 Greenway Projects nationwide.

The funding was allocated under the Carbon Tax Fund 2020 and provides support for feasibility, planning and design for Greenways around the country.

Welcoming the announcement, Orla Carroll, Director of Product Development at Fáilte Ireland said it was ‘a welcome and timely boost for tourism and the development of world class greenway experiences in Ireland.’

She added: “Fáilte Ireland is extremely pleased to have worked closely with the Department on developing the projects.

“It is critical we invest in the future of walking and cycling for the economic and social wellbeing of our communities and visitors.

“This funding will complete the feasibility and planning stages of greenway development, therefore ensuring a pipeline of fantastic future projects are ready to be developed when further funding is secured. We are delighted to support the department with this announcement and look forward to engaging with the development of these projects into the future.”

Derry City and Strabane District Council recently lodged a planning application to construct the 3.7km section of greenway from Derry to Bridgend.
