Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney welcomed the initiative.

“The Global Greening movement gets bigger across the globe each year and I am delighted we are able to play out part in the City,” he said.

“It has been a successful initiative in marking St Patrick’s Day across the world and is particularly important this year as it can be done within the Covid 19 restrictions.

“I hope we get some dry nights this week so local people can get out and about to see the buildings lit up for themselves and take photographs.”

Some of the other buildings lighting up around the world are the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls, the ‘Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas, the London Eye, the Sky Tower in Auckland, the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, the Cibeles Fountain in Madrid and many others.
