Wanted for play: One coffin and a single bed

Derry playwright Brian Foster has made an unusual request for help with his new play - he needs a coffin and a single bed.

The local man, who has penned ‘When the Bogside Spinster met the Carndonagh Stud’ which opens on November 16 at the Millennium Forum is now in the third week of rehearsals with his cast Eoghan Mc Bride, Pat Lynch, Kathy Deehan, Rachel Melaugh and Shaunsy Coyle.

“I need an old single bed as a stage prop,” Brian told the ‘Journal.’ “It has to be old and shabby, single and either brown wood or metal framed, the shabbier the better.

“Something you were about to dump out. In return I can pay a small fee or you can have two tickets for the play. Providing it breaks down into three sections I can collect in my car.”

Brian also revealed that he needs a brown adult coffin for the play.

“I need it anytime between now and the first week in November,” he said. “I have a garage to store it if someone had one now.”

Running for four nights in November the action takes place in 1966 in a crumbling old house down in Derry’s Bogside.

Aged 43, spinster Mary Coyle (played by a male actor in the style of TVs Mrs Brown would you believe) is still a virgin...albeit a reluctant one ... a desperate one!

Then, at a dance in The Embassy ballroom, she meets the man of her dreams, Donegal bachelor, ‘the legendary Carndonagh stud’. Patsy McDaid (Pat Lynch).

But Patsy is a man with a secret ... and he’s not the only one.

The play has already been described as a “screamingly funny adult comedy.”
