13-year-old arrested for burglary in Ballymagroarty

Colr. McGinley was describing the atmosphere in the estate after a 13 years-old was arrested in connection with the burglary of a shop on Monday evening.

“I am concerned about the recent increase in this type of incident - there is uneasiness in the area and I would encourage everyone to be vigilant.”

The ‘Journal’ understands Monday’s burglary took place at around 8.00 p.m. when the shop was open to the public.

A source said those responsible were “no older than 13 or 14” and claimed that they threatened staff after they were caught.

“The young ones were trying to get into a nearby building site when they broke into the shop - they were caught red handed.

“They threatened the staff after they were caught, but the owner has had enough and is taking a stand this time - the shop provides local jobs for local people.”

Colr. McGinley went on to appeal directly to young people and asked them to think twice before engaging in anti-social and criminal activity.

“Young people need to understand the seriousness of a criminal conviction,” continued the Sinn Fein councillor.

“I am talking about serious offences like breaking and entering - things that, if found guilty, will stay with you for a very long time.

“I would also appeal to parents to be aware of where their children are at all times - especially in this good weather when people are outside more.”

“We have some security equipment that can be installed throughout the Police and Community Safety Partnership (P.C.S.P.) - if anyone is interested in finding out more about what is available all they have to do is contact me or the P.C.S.P.,” concluded Colr. McGinley.
