Road works at Ardan Road in the Culmore area of the city are due to start next week.
Preliminary works on the £140,000 resurfacing and traffic calming scheme will get underway on November 10.
The works will stretch from the road’s junction with Culmore Road to its junction with Coney Road - a distance of 364 metres.
The main resurfacing will be undertaken between December 8 and December 17.
DRD Minister Danny Kennedy says the scheme will “greatly improve” the safety, strength and surface quality of the road.
It’s understood works have been phased in such a way as to maintain access to Hollybush Primary School at key times during the school day.
However, at other times between December 8 and 17, the road will be closed to through traffic.
Traffic will be diverted via the (U1119) Culmore Point Road and (A1002) Culmore Road. Access for local traffic will be accommodated.
The scheme is expected to be substantially completed by December 19.
DRD says the planned dates are subject to favourable weather conditions.
TransportNI says motorists should be aware that some delays may be expected and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.
