Derry City Council have rubber-stamped a proposal to issue 40 free tickets for the Mayor’s Civic Ball, which is expected to be the last ever staged in the city.

The tickets, which normally cost £50 each, will be sent out to a special list of dignitaries “throughout the country” ahead of the Guildhall event on Saturday March 21st.

The matter was raised at yesterday’s meeting of the council’s Policy and Resources Committee.

Chair of the committee, SDLP Councillor John Boyle, said it was “fairly standard” to hold back some tickets for this annual event so they can be distributed in this way.

He added that it gave the Council the chance to “put our best foot forward” and to showcase the revamped Guildhall.

The historic Mayor of Derry office will end in March when the Derry-Strabane supercouncil comes into being.
