AILG delegates pay tribute to RNLI

Councillor Nicholas Crossan, Donegal Cathoirleach Ciaran Brogan and AILG President Councillor John Croww presented the gesture to RNLI lifeboat manager John McCarter at the conference in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel.

Mr McCarter said the crew were “delighted” with the donation and outlined the history of Lough Swilly RNLI to the many delegates in attendance.

Mr McCarter also pointed out how the work of the RNLI and their equipment was sustained by the generosity of the general public, adding how this is a “wonderful testament to the generosity of people across the country.”

Mr McCarter told those gathered how there had been a “horrendous tragedy” in Buncrana which the crew are working through, but said this was “nothing in comparison to what the family are going through.”

He added that when rescue services are in “close contact” with a tragedy of that proportion it has “a lasting effect on everyone.”

He said how a “lot of work” had take place to enable them to go back to do the work they do and paid tribute to the “great volunteer spirit” that exists within the RNLI.

Mr McCarter said Lough Swilly RNLI was “very well supported” by Donegal County Council, adding how he “couldn’t doesn’t more highly of the executive.” He also praised the local community for its “strong support.” Mr McCarter said the average donation to the RNLI is 50p a head but in Inishowen and Donegal it equates to nearly 1.80 a head. He said this was “wonderful to see.”
