Altnagelvin cancer probe unit to be modernised

Altnagelvin's service for checking for a range of cancers including those of the stomach and colon is to be totally revamped in order to reflect the clinical needs of a modern theatre environment.

The Western Trust wants to replace its existing Endoscopy Procedure Unit and supporting wards in the Derry hospital’s Nucleus Block courtyard.

In an application newly-lodged with the Council’s planning division, the health body says the new development, if and when approved, will offer “a permanent solution containing two operating theatres and support accommodation that reflects the clinical needs of a modern theatre environment with supporting plant and services located at first floor level.”

The development’s just the latest example of modernisation at the 56-year-old hospital over the past decade.
