From the archive: Tunney pays tribute to Buncrana Youth Club during visit - November 1979

'The Youth Club of today finds itself forced into direct competition with the characteristic elements of our increasingly affluent society.

“That is, with amusement halls and, of course, with public houses. Not only must it compete with this opposition but it must win,” said Mr. James Tunney, T.D., the Minister of State for Education, when he officially opened the new extension to Buncrana Youth Club on Sunday.

“It gives me a great satisfaction to perform an official opening such as this,” said Mr. Tunney. “I appreciate that your invitation derives from the recognition by the Youth Club of the assistance given by my Department towards making the clubhouse dream a reality. I am most grateful for the kind invitation and I wish all members of the club a very happy and prosperous ‘club life.’”
