Assembly Election: Votes being verified in Foyle

The process of verifying votes at the Assembly Election count for Foyle is still continuing this afternoon.

The count centre at the city’s Foyle Arena opened at around 7am.

To date the only official information has been the turnout figure and the number of votes actually cast.

In Foyle the amount of people eligble to vote was 71,759, the total votes cast were 40,187. This means the turnout was 56.0027% an approximate decrease of 1.8% from 2011.

In East Derry the eligible electorate was 68,600, total votes polled were 38,848 and the turnout therefore wsas 50.79%, a downturn of just over three per dent since the last election.

Whilst no official quota has yet been released based on turnout and votes cast the figure for getting elected in Foyle should be slightly increased to roughly 5,700.In 2011 5,500 votes were required to become an MLA.

Whilst it is very early days in this count, initial indications are that People Before Profit Alliance candidate Eamonn McCann appears to have polled particularly well. Although in 2011, he took 8% of the vote and eventually lost out on a seat because of a lack of transfers.
