Foyle Valley Athletic Club have released a statement following the sudden death of their Chairman, Colum ‘Packy’ Deehan yesterday.
Mr Deehan was a very well known figure in local athletics circles.
A statement from the club said: “The Foyle Valley Athlete Club is in mourning after the news of the sudden death of Colum Packy Deehan which occurred yesterday, The well known Chairman of the club was was described as a true gentleman , his love for his club , family and those who worked with him will be sadly missed . Packy was inspirational in the club and no task was too big , he enjoyed training and competing and always had a smile when you met him .”
Minister for the Environment, Mark H Durkan, himself a keen runner also told of his sorrow after the death.
He said: ““It was with great shock and sadness that I learned of the death of Packy Deehan, chairman of Foyle Valley AC.
“Packy was a positive and popular character in Derry and anywhere else his running took him. He provided motivation and inspiration to many. The road always seemed shorter with Packy running by your side.
“He will be sadly and sorely missed not only by his own family, who are in our thoughts and prayers, but by Derry’s growing running family and particularly members of Foyle Valley, his beloved club.”
