Bail for youth accusedof Quinn murder

The boy, who cannot be named due to his age, appeared at the local court from the Woodlands Juvenile Justice centre via videolink.

A Public Prosecution Service (PPS) solicitor told the court that two bail addresses - one in the Waterside and another in Donegal - were being proffered by the defence.

A PSNI officer, however, said police were objecting to the address in the Republic as it was outside the jurisdiction and this posed problems in terms of monitoring.

Objections to the Derry address were based on its proximity to the address of the victim’s family and that it was near a main shopping centre, which presented a risk of the defendant coming into contact with the victim’s family.

A defence solicitor said the defendant’s mother had pledged to daily bring the defendant from Donegal to the city for presentation to the local police. But District Judge Barney McElholm said an address outside the jurisdiction was out of the question due to the nature of the charge.

He granted the accused his own bail of £1,000 along with a surety of £750. The defendant was also ordered not to enter Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre or the Crescent Link Retail Park and to adhere to a curfew from 7.30pm to 7.30am.

The case was listed for review on December 22 with the defendant to appear again on January 23.
