The Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness is 12/1 to become the next President of Ireland.

The betting site Paddy Power lists the Derry politician behind Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness, 6/1, and television and radio presenter Miriam O’Callaghan at 7/1.

Even the Derry Journal’s sports pundit Joe Brolly is on the list 16/1.

The television commentator was placed high in the voting list with current Taoiseach Enda Kenny a longshot at 33/1.

Derry’s Dana is also available at 66/1 while other longshots include former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern at 100/1 and Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams who can be backed at 80/1.

The U2 frontman Bono is also available at 100/1 along with Republic of Ireland’s assistant manager Roy Keane at the same odds.

Meanwhile, Ian Paisley’s widow has revealed that Martin McGuinness was extremely supportive during the DUP leader’s final days.

Speaking at an event in Belfast Eileen Paisley said, “He would have texted me just to ask how Ian was and say he was thinking about him. It was very precious to us as a family.”
