An interesting new heritage exhibition highlighting the variety of Big Houses of the Causeway Coast opens at the Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre/Ionad Ealaíon agus Cultúir Ghleann na Ró in Limavady on Saturday 7th November 2015.

The Big Houses of the Causeway Coast are surrounded by an air of mystery, as they hide behind trees, protecting their privacy, long after the original owners have left. Many that remain are known today for their immense architectural value, with some acting as the only surviving work of famous Irish and European Architects. But it is not just the building itself that is important, it is also the estate and outside grounds that allowed for hunting or playing fashionable sports such as cricket.

The Big house was the focal point of a larger estate that served key functions within many local communities. It is these key functions within the local Causeway Coast communities that Limavady Museum which to bring out through this pilot exhibition. This exhibition gives the opportunity to view period images of these houses of which many share a common history and will act as a starting point, developed to gather photographs and information from those who lived or worked in the buildings and their surrounding estates to highlight the relationship of the Big Houses with their local communities.

Coinciding with the opening of this exhibition will be an Archiving Open Day where you have the opportunity to help Limavady Museum develop their collection and be part of a future exhibition by bringing along your photographs and stories relating to the Big Houses of Limavady. All photographs will be scanned on the day with originals returned to the owner. Saturday 7 November 12noon-2pm at the Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre.

The exhibition will be on display in the Ritter Gallery until 30th January. Galleries are open Monday-Wednesday 9.30am-5pm, Thursday-Friday 9.30am-9.30pm and Saturday 9.30am-5pm. For further information, please contact the Arts Centre on Tel: 028 7776 0650 or visit www.roevalleyarts.com
