Bishop Edward Daly is laid to rest

The remains of Bishop Edward Daly are carried to their final resting place after Requiem Mass in St. Eugene's Cathedral.

Irish President, Michael D. Higgins attended the funeral as did deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, former SDLP leader, John Hume, Lord Eames, Archbishop Eamon Martin and the Bloody Sunday families.

A message of condolence from Pope Francis has been read at the funeral by Papal Nuncio, Monsignor Medina Blanco (Chargé d’Affaires ai, Apostolic Nunciature in Ireland).

More than one thousand people gathered inside St. Eugene’s Cathedral for the Requiem Mass of the former Bishop of Derry who died at the age of 82 on Monday. Hundreds of other people lined the streets outside.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ before the Requiem Mass, Kay Duddy, sister of 17 year-old Jackie Duddy who was shot dead on Bloody Sunday said Bishop Daly “should be canonised”.

Bishop Daly was buried in a small cemetery in the grounds of St. Eugene’s Cathedral next to his predecessor, Bishop Neil Farren who was Bishop of Derry from 1939 until 1973 and who died in 1980.
