Body recovered from Foyle: post mortem to take place

Police in Derry have said a post mortem examination will be carried out on the remains taken from the River Foyle this afternoon.

The identity of the body has yet to be confirmed.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the body was recovered at around 1.30pm by teams involved in the search operation.

A PSNI spokeswoman said this evening: “Police in Derry can confirm that a body was recovered from the River Foyle this afternoon (Monday 27 March).

“A post mortem examination and identification procedures will be carried out in due course.

“There are no further details at present.”

A spokesperson for Foyle Search and Rescue said earlier today: “There has been a body recovery and police are currently dealing with it.”

Searches have been ongoing to recover the remains of two young men who are believed to have lost their lives in the river in separate incidents more than a month apart.
