Reliable sources said the scheme would provide between 350 and 400 car parking spaces for Bogside residents.

The scheme, which was first proposed back in 2007, materialised after residents started to experience problems finding car parking spaces near their homes.

The scheme will be run out in six zones - William Street; Little Diamond, Abbey Street; Rossville/Chamberlain Street; Fahan Street and St. Columb’s Park Wells.

The scheme is free of charge to residents and people will be able to apply for one parking permit per household.

Motorists parking in any of the designated zones without a permit, will face fixed penalty fines.

The scheme is expected to commence later this year.
