After a long three year wait to get to the skies, this Sunday, will see the launch of Ireland’s largest model helicopter over the Inishowen peninsula.

After purchasing the copter in 2007, Carndonagh man, Tommy Cunningham, has been trying his best to see his beloved possession in the air - at times almost even giving up.

But with the help of a fellow enthusiast from county Longford, Tommy will finally see his model helicopter in the air for the first time in the Inishowen and the North West area.

The aircraft, which is approximately a quarter of a full scale Jet Ranger Helicopter, has created a stir in the area and from the first time Tommy took the machine out people have been asking about it.

“From the first time I’ve taken it out there has been big interest from people so we’re hoping there will be a few people around on Sunday to see it. I’m really looking forward to see it finally flying on Sunday.”

However it won’t the only model on display as there will also be lots of different model aircraft. The event is all part of a Family Activity Fun Day organised by the Burt Local Residents Group and will take place at the local GAA ground.

“It is a big machine, but we’re all just hoping it will be a good day as if there is any wind at all we won’t be able to set it off. Most model aircrafts have a fly bar which makes them easier to fly but mine doesn’t so many said it would never fly, but I’m glad I’ve stuck with it.

“Even the engineer in Longford was shocked to see one so big, he decided to copy it but his is smaller.”

The family fun day, which gets underway at 2.00 pm, will include all the usual sporting events associated with the old style family sports day, such as Children’s Races, Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Penalty Kick Competition, Bin the Ball, Tug Of War, Horse Shoe Throwing, Nappy Hanging, Picture Quiz, Crazy Golf, Children’s Fancy Dress and there will also be Commercial and private stall sites so there will be plenty of bargains on offer also.

The organisers have also arranged live music by a well known local group who will play throughout the afternoon and there will also be teas and hot food also available all day.
