Autumn start for North Wing building

Confirmation that work on Altnagelvin’s new North Wing will begin within months has been welcomed by Foyle Sinn Fein MLA Maeve McLaughlin.

The Health Minister Jim wells and Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) have now confirmed that detailed design work and tender preparation on ward accommodation at the new facility have been progressing.

News of the development was received in a reply to a question about the timeline for the project put to Mr Wells by Ms McLaughlin.

Ms McLaughlin, who is also Chair of the Health Committee, said the Minister “has replied to say the detailed design work and tender preparation are progressing well and it is currently planned to award the contract and commence construction on site by late Summer/early Autumn 2015”.

She said: “This is positive news for the North West region that this work is to progress in the coming months. I visited Altnagelvin recently and was amazed at the amount of work that is taking place. This, coupled with the new radiotherapy unit, is much need investment in our health estate and it is important that we maximise this benefit to the wider economy.”

A WHSCT spokeswoman meanwhile confirmed: “Subject to planning approval and confirmation of funding, the Trust anticipates an award of contract for this work and commencement of construction on site by autumn 2015. Work with respect to the enabling works, including the multi-storey car park, continue on site and are expected to be completed in advance of the North Wing construction works commencing.”
