More than 6,000 people are signing on in Derry - more than double the number of dole claimants in 2008

New figures released today by the North’s Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment show that in July the number of people claiming unemployment related benefits in the city stood at 6,080 - that’s 8.5% of the city’s working age population..

In July 2008, that figure stood at 2,978.

Today’s figures show 4,189 men and 1,891 women are signing on in the city.

In June 104 people came off the dole in the city, but in July 107 people joined the dole queues.

Derry has the highest rate of unemployment among the North’s 26 local council areas.

Across the North the number of unemployment benefit claimants fell by 500 in July.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said the figures “ reflect Northern Ireland’s strengthening economic position.”
