Derry tour guide scoops top award - again

A Derry tour guide has scooped one of the most sought after awards in the industry for the third year running.

Ronan McNamara, of McNamara Tours, received the CIE Best Feature Tour Award earlier this week.

The award marks a coup for the Tour Guide Association which also run a number of other guides in the city.

Hosted by Dublin-based CIE Tours, the awards are voted on by the thousands of tourists who take part in coach tours across Ireland every year.

McNamara previously scooped the CIE Best Feature Tour Award in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Speaking to the Journal this week, Ronan explained that the award was a ‘vote of confidence in the city’.

“This is great news not only for The Tour Guide Association, but for Derry as a whole,” he said.

“This is the fifth time that McNamara Tours have picked up the award in the last six years, so it shows the level of interest tourists have in visiting the city.

“These coaches are travelling to the likes of Belfast, Galway and Dublin, so this shows just how popular Derry is.”

Tony Henderson, chairman of The Tour Guide Association, said the award was a huge boost to the Tour Guiding Association which is based in the city’s Craft Village

“This award is a superb accolade for the city, given that it’s one of the biggest of its kind in Ireland,” he said.

“All the members of The Tour Guide Association provide a top quality guiding service as they all have engaged in extensive research on the city and provide a friendly service to every group they encounter.”

The groups included in The Tour Guide Association are, headed by Mr. Henderson, and Tours ‘n’ Trails, fronted by Finola Faller and Eilish Quigley.

The group also includes About Ulster, with German tour guided Petra Hermann at the helm, and the multiple award winning McNamara Tours, with Ronan McNamara.
