Flexxgym.com to create 20 jobs at Platinum site

A Derry gym which was shut amid controversy is to reopen under new ownership with the creation of 20 new jobs.

The premises of the former Platinum Gym - which ceased trading on April 1 leaving paid up members in the lurch - is currently being fitted out for opening at the end of this month.

New owner, Pete Fox, says the new facility, Flexxgym.com, will be “bigger and better” than its predecessor. The Derry businessman aims to create around 20 new full and part time jobs at the Springtown Industrial Estate unit which will include three state-of-the-art gym areas, a hairdressing and beauty salon and a 20 seater cafe.

A former member of Platinum Gym, Mr Fox believes that other ex-members will be delighted that the facility is to be reopened. “I’m opening it simply because the town needs it - the members loved Platinum Gym,” he says.

“Thousands of people in Derry used the place, I did too and I loved going there to train. It was a great place to meet people, there was a great social scene and people were getting fit at the same time.”

He says the new gym will offer “all same positive aspects” of Platinum with even more value for money. “We’re going a step better by opening three gyms in one - a main gym, a ladies only gym and a schools gym. We want to let people enjoy their gym at an affordable price, that’s why we have an amazing offer of £40 for the first three months membership. Check out the website at www.flexxgym.com”.

Platinum Gym hit the headlines on April 1 after it was closed suddenly leaving many hundreds of members out of pocket.
