Call for solution to Buncrana traffic delays

At this week’s Inishowen Municipal District meeting, Councillor Nicholas Crossan asked if any solution could be found to the problem. There are pedestrian lights at the end of St Mary’s Road, giving right of way to that traffic, many of which turn right at the mini roundabout up towards the main street. The lights only turn red when a person crossing requests it to do so.

This then leads to delays for traffic attempting to access the main street from the Cockhill Road, on which there are no lights. Seamus Hopkins, area roads enginner, said the issue had been highlighted to roads design. He said there had been suggestions of placing a time limit on the lights and even restrictions to allow the main flow of traffic to come up from Cockhill Road. He said he would go back and look at the issue to determine if it could be progressed. Councillor Crossan said that, if there was “even something that stopped the traffic at St Mary’s road for a minute”, it would be beneficial.
