'˜Centenary Challenge' a huge success

The distance of the race was exactly 1.916 miles which is a reference to the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

More than 150 people took part in the event and the winners of the mens’ and women’ race were Robbie Taylor and Jaquiline McCann respectively.

Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, took part along with Sinn Fein election candidate, Raymond McCartney.

Mr. McGuinness and Sinn Fein election candidate, Maeve McLaughlin, presented the winners with their prizes during the awards ceremony which was held in the Gasyard Centre.

Those who took part in the event were presented with limited edition commemoration T-Shirts, certificates and limited edition ‘Centenary Challenge’ medals.

“It was a fantastic day out and it was great to see so many young families taking part,” said a spokesperson for the Bogside and Brandywell Monuments Committee, who organised the event.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped towards making the ‘Centenary Challenge’ a real day to remember,” the spokesperson added.

The ‘Centenary Challenge’ event is only one of the local events to have been organised to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
